Coolidge (1872 - 1933), a former governor of Massachusetts, was Vice-President under Warren G. Harding and succeeded to the Presidency (as the 30th President) when Harding died suddenly in August 1923. Coolidge subsequently won a Presidential election in his own right in 1924 and held office until 1929. Singer and actor Jolson (1886 - 1950), born Asa Yoelson, emigrated to the US from Lithuania as a young boy and sang in circus shows, vaudeville and minstrel shows before becoming a massive Broadway star in the 1910s and 1920s. His fame was such that at the peak of his popularity he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer". Jolson also starred in the first full-length talking movie - The Jazz Singer in 1927 - and released numerous hit records. His career declined slightly in the 1930s but he won renewed fame in 1946 with the release of the musical movie The Jolson Story, a film loosely based on his life. The picture, by the National Photo Company, was taken when Jolson and other celebrity supporters attended a White House breakfast hosted by Coolidge and his wife during his 1924 election campaign.
