Adventures of Kypros MAURITANIA Mauritania is a desert country situated in northwest Africa between Morocco and Senegal Most people have never heard of it as it doesnÕt really do much of anything It has some quaint idiosyncrasies such as not allowing visitors and it also has some sort of strange water contamination that causes red crystals to grow out of people s teeth My guidebook described Mauritania as The armpit of Africa The Muslim population is not overly fanatical although everyone is supposed to pray five times per day I have never really understood how the constant praying mixes so well with lots of thieves How can they pray so often and worship Allah and then steal something Police barriers every few miles prevent free travel and trade A begging official at each of these checkpoints knows how to ask for a gift in French and Arabic Previous tourists have created a nuisance by succumbing to the officials and have handed over shoes money and sweets The government has instructed the police to stop begging so they now beg in a different way Please give me something to remember you by I sometimes handed them a single date When they looked bewildered I told them it was a gift to remember me by They usually returned it and I put it on the floor to give to the next nuisance For some reason police are paranoid about spies and search diligently for them and other potential enemies of the state A camera will brand you a potential spy and a set of walkie talkies will certainly get you arrested Lurking behind the wire fences that surround the single white camp hundreds of faces peer through the mesh looking for opportunities Any spare tire or tool left outside overnight will be stolen by morning The desert is interesting because it contains billions of miniature seashells as well as sand and small rocks A dolphin s skull found hundreds of miles from the beach confirmed that this country was once underwater Kypros 2003 ( traduction automatique  ) ( montrer le texte original )
